Maternal & Newborn Health Resolution- UPDATE

The Worldwide Organization of Women (WOW) was very involved in the passage of the Maternal and Newborn Health resolution at the Human Rights Council in Geneva at the UN in June, 2010.

It was proposed that this “No Woman Should Die During Childbirth” campaign would be an important followup campaign for WOW to promote in the USA.  It seems with the US Congressional “commitment to promoting maternal health and child survival both at home and abroad through greater international investment and participation”, it would be natural for us to support this  new bill — the “Global MOMS Act” .
The Global MOMS Act will help stop needless deaths by expanding access to better quality maternal health services and ensuring that they meet international human rights standards. This would be a great followup to our work at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Valerie Hudson, a Brigham Young University professor in Political Science proposed we take part in a  Monument to mothers who died in childbirth project.  WOW has spoken with Jacki Hunlow, creator of the Mother’s Legacy Project, who has been named the SCULPTURESS for this project, and are in touch with researcher Matt Stearmer, also from Brigham Young University, to further assist in this project.
